Battle of Iwo Jima
The Battle of Iwo Jima was a battle fought for the hopeful gain of a strategic place from which the Americans and the Allies could start their raids of Japan. This meant that the Americans would need to take one of Japan's islands, in this case, Iwo Jima. The Japanese were not going to simply let the Americans take the island and fought hard once February of 1945 came and they continued to fight hard once the battle had ended in March of the same year.
The Battle of Iwo Jima would not be an easy battle to win it was the Japanese's home turf and they knew the terrain and it's benefits for combat. A major point in the battle was when the Americans were finally able to get off the beaches of Iwo Jima and overtake Mount Suribachi. Fighting on the mountain continued and overall the fighting was very brutal because of the ways the Japanese were able to surprise the American troops by using tunnel systems and their knowledge of the terrain. Eventually the Americans were able to make enough advancements, and cause enough Japanese casualties that the island of Iwo Jima was overtaken.
The Battle of Iwo Jima was important to World War II because since the Americans were able to take the island, they were able to make a base for starting their raids of Japan until the war had ended despite the large amount of casualties they suffered during the battle.
