Guadalcanal
The fighting at Guadalcanal was seen as a turning point for the Americans fighting against the Japanese. The Americans knew that if they won over the island of Guadalcanal, part of the Solomon Islands, it would shelter their ally Australia and it would help them win their battle against the Japanese since they had previously bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
The brutal fighting lasted from August 1942 until February of 1943 and most of the time it would get to high temperatures during the day, which made fighting hard carrying all the gear and wearing the uniforms in that hot weather. Another complication that arose because of the island consisting mostly of jungle were bugs that carried various diseases. The fighting was all over the island, the surrounding water, and the air and it was all intense fighting.
The victory came to the Americans and they won the island of Guadalcanal, which helped them tremendously in their fight against the Japanese. This victory was important to World War II and specifically the Americans because they wanted to punish the
Japanese for what they did to Pearl Harbor and this victory put them one step closer to victory for themselves and the Allied cause of World War II.
